Founded in the 1820s, the town developed as a river port in the following decade and became an important inland TRADING POST for the Hunter River Steam Navigation Company. Crops flourished on the plains alongside the river, and for many years this region was an important food supplier for the young colony. However, late in the 1800s the silting of the river and the completion of the rail link between Newcastle and Sydney saw its importance as a TRADING PORT decline, and Morpeth fell quietly asleep.

Only to awake with a new spirit when the 170 years old Industrial Building in

Robert St opened its doors 20 Years ago as the MOPETH TRADINGPOST. Built in 1838 the Morpeth Trading Post is in fact the oldest Industrial Building still in daily use in NSW. It contains one of Australia's deepest natural Spring Water well, having been sunk in 1818 for Morpeth Town's Water Supply and later for the old Joinery's Steam Engine. It still has the Horses' Harness, old Tools and Machinery from the Steam Engine days.

2006 was the latest significant date. Dieter and Christine took over the Morpeth Trading Post.

Born in Germany in the 50’s and living in Australia since 1973 they brought a wealth of knowledge (Dieter was an Engineer and Christine a Librarian) into the business.

It shows in the enormous variety of items on display. They have lost there accent but
